                       GMDSS VHF/DSC Radio installation

  • VHF radios are the most popular and common on smaller vessels communications. There are two types of radio stations - stationary and portable
  • Stationary radio installed in the premises - in the running or the radio room in the cabin of a yacht or a boat and used as the primary means for transmitting distress signals and radio communication with vessels and shore-based services within their reach.VHF radio telephone operating in a dedicated mode for the maritime mobile frequency range 6.025 - 162.025 MHz and have 55 frequency channels, some of which is used for simplex communication, the other part - for duplex.Handheld radios can have any number of channels, but the obligatory presence of the 16-th channel and a call of distress.Stationary radio stations have output power of 25 W with its reduction to 1 watt, portable radios - 5 and 1 W.

  • Among allocated for maritime communications channels 55 occupy a special place two -16 th channel for the call and transmission of distress messages and 70 minutes for transmitting receiving distress signals using the digital selective calling (DSC) in the GMDSS system. On February 1, 2005 distress signaling is transferred only on channel 70 in DSC mode, and channel 16 will be used only to call.

  • DSC is a digital code sequence containing the address, a message about the nature of the disaster, the identification number of the vessel. The composition may be incorporated distress vessel coordinates entered manually or automatically from the satellite navigation receiver or else from a navigation device. The code signal is formed a special built in transceiver or constructed as a separate unit.To monitor the distress signals transmitted by DSC, automatic receiver is part of the unit capable of receiving a distress message on the 70th channel, and display the content on the display.According to current terminology, radio with DSC call "radio installation".
